It was time for Hunky and Dorie's annual check-up and shots. The toughest part about that is getting them into carriers for the short drive to the vet.

It takes two of us and some devious planning. The first step is to bring the carriers up to the stair landing without the furry guys noticing. Then we had to separate them so one didn't witness the other being stuffed into a carrier.

The Husband coaxed Hunky into the spare bedroom and kept him busy while I sweet-talked Dorie on the couch. Then I picked her up and headed for the carrier. I deftly managed to insert her without much fuss before she knew what was going on.

At that point I delivered the other carrier to the Husband, and his lot was somewhat less simple. Hunky's eyes grew wide at the sight of the carrier, and he decided he didn't want to be there. But the Husband managed to get the struggling 18-lb. feline into the carrier with some difficulty and some very plaintive meowing from Hunky (he's very good at plaintive meowing).

Katie Couric once explained the process succinctly: Throw a box over the cat, then turn the house upside down.

The exam itself was anti-climatic. They got their shots and check-ups in quick time and willingly returned to the carriers for the trip home.

And we get to do it all again next year.
