I did a big load of laundry, and I was surprised to find that I'd gotten back all the socks I put in!

Not that that hasn't happened before, but it is weird that socks disappear with some frequency. Why is that? A washing machine (and the nearby dryer) is a finite confined area. Where can they go?

A couple times I've found stray socks in the bottom of the closets that never made it into the laundry basket, but not often enough to justify the ongoing absence of the foot mittens.

So I figured before I do the laundry I should separate all the socks and count them to verify matching pairs as I toss them in the washer.

But I've really got better things to do.
