Hunky and Dorie continue to create their own toys, and their own ways of using them. We found them playing with one of the Christmas tree balls in March. They had apparently stashed one away to save for this occasion.

You may have seen the dispenser packs of 12 canned sodas. Once they are empty, we store them under the kitchen table until recycling day. Except they don't stay there. They have been found in all parts of the house. Dorie likes to stick her head in them and push them around.

There is a small wastebasket in the spare bedroom into which paper towels will occasionally wind up. But not for long.

Caps to ball-point pens, one of Hunky's favorite improvised toys, have a decidedly short lifespan around here.

And then there are the boxes. Most of my shopping is online, which means boxes are frequently arriving at our front door. It is mandatory that the emptied boxes stay in the living room for at least three days so Hunky and Dorie can maximize their possibities.

We call this entertainment on a budget.
