Dec 29, 2008 Monday

I just got back from a weekend in New York City with my nieces and nephew (and their parents - the Husband stayed home with Hunky and Dorie). We went to see "Mary Poppins" and "The Little Mermaid" on Broadway. Both excellent. "The Little Mermaid" actual seemed like the characters were swimming underwater on stage. I gave it five stars.

The economy has hit Broadweay as well. Theater tickets for almost any show were easy to come by (usually they're sold out weeks or months in advance). Many shows were in danger of closing.

But you'd never know there was a recession by the stores on Times Square. We had to wait hours just to get into the M&M store (which not only sold the little candies, but toys, dolls and clothing related to the M&M characters - all at exorbitant prices).

We also dined at a nice Italian restaurant that served everything family style (you ordered big bowls or platters, and just loaded up your plate).

We stayed at a really nice hotel on the fringe area of the theater district (lotsa walking), and we got to see the big ball in Times Square that will drop on New Year's Eve to welcome in 2009. But we weren't sticking around for that.

We had taken the train up and we returned the same way, with the Husband doing shuttle duty at both ends.

A pretty cool way to wrap up the year. Happy New Year!
