A week ago was election day, and I related the tale of the Unknown Voter (me), and my attempt to vote. My name had disappeared from the rolls, even though I'd lived at the same location for 23 years and voted in every election. So I was permitted a Provisional Ballot, meaning if they could confirm that I was a registered voter, my vote would count. I was told I would be notified of my status in a week or two.
Last Friday I received a letter from the Board of Elections. In it was a voter registration card with my name and address and a registration date of 1985 (when I first registered to vote in NJ).
But there was no letter accompanying it. No explanation for my absence from the voting rolls, no confirmation that my ballot had been counted, no apology for the oversight. I could only assume from the receipt of the voter registration card that I was indeed a registered voter once again. But not even that was officially confirmed.
Nothing on the ballot was that close this year that my insignificant vote would have had any effect, so I'm not that concerned about whether my vote was counted.
But next year's voting promises to be a little tighter, and I'll be there with my voter registration card in hand.
