I'm not a big fan of the Olympics. I will watch the highlights show after the 11 o'clock news, or catch up with events on the appropriate websites.

But this time I was working late on the Friday night of the opening ceremonies, and I turned it on, just to have some kind of background distraction while I hunted and pecked at my keyboard.

Opening ceremonies are usually the same old song and dance, made noisier and/or glitzier for the occasion, and I wasn't expecting anything diffent this time. But before long I had abandoned my work and had parked myself at rapt attention in front of the tv. And I pretty much stayed that way through the entire ceremony.

Needless to say, the same old song and dance had been considerably polished. It was extremely visual and very creative. Lots of thinking outside the box. And each successive performance outdid the previous one.

If you saw it, and are impressed by creative presentations, you know what I mean. If you didn't, or are not, then I can't begin to explain it.

But it's available on dvd already :)
