The standard outgoing procedures are as follows:

Mice and Chipmunks:
These small and curious creatures like to explore the new surroundings as soon as things get quiet, and generally find their way into the humane trap within 24 hours. They are then released back into the woods.

Birds:
Birds hide but make too much noise for their own good. Once located (usually behind the sofa), the procedure is to close all doors and venetian blinds, then open the sliding glass door off the dining room. The bird is then flushed from its hiding place and makes straight for the only source of outdoor light and is gone.

Frogs and Toads:
They travel to the nearest corner and wait, totally confused. Upon discovery, they are picked up (with no arguments), placed in a small box (kept under the kitchen table for just that purpose) and returned to the creek bed area.

Rabbits:
Same as frogs, except they make a helluva racket if approached (a lotta fun at 3 am).

Snakes:
There has only been one occurrence of a snake (that we know of); it was found in a heat vent, was prodded into the box and returned to the woods.

Situations that deviated from the normal outgoing procedures are marked with an asterisk and a number, and are detailed in the footnotes column.
