We were watching tv late one night when we heard a major racket in the kitchen. We wondered what the cat was up to when we noticed him on the dining room table, staring into the kitchen. The Husband gingerly poked his head around the corner and saw a small possum eating the cat's food. He had found the cat door and made his way upstairs to the kitchen. The Husband waved to the Wife to come look. The possum saw us and panicked, pacing back and forth along the far wall. The Husband quickly put the bird plan into action, opening the sliding glass door to the deck. We then tried to herd him into the dining room. Never approach a cornered possum; you could lose a finger. He got a whiff of outdoor air and was out on the deck as fast as he could waddle. We discussed blocking off the cat door but decided nah; it was a fluke. And he had surely been too frightened to return.

Two days later we were watching tv when the Wife noticed a pair of beady little eyes watching us from the stairwell. He had returned and brazenly proceeded into the kitchen. We repeated the process, but he didn't panic this time. He grabbed a few extra bites and meandered casually out on the deck. The cat had to rely on humans letting him in and out for the next week. The possum did not return.
