The Kitchen
begun March 1, 2004.

Task: To replace worn cabinet fronts and coordinate the entire kitchen with the new black appliances.

The black dishwasher and range didn't go with the brown cabinets ...

so we hired a company to destroy them ...

which they did, rather efficiently.

We handled the painting.

The cabinet people installed new cabinet fronts ...

and a coordinating counter with black sink ...

We then tiled the entire wall area between the counter and wall cabinets ...

... then came the floor, a snap-together wood laminate

... which required a sealant around potentially wet areas

... and a stick-on plastic baseboard.

The kitchen now has a whole new look ...

Preparing for the new 'fridge, the Wife vacuums the old one (?)

Installing the new black 'fridge was simple ...

... except the water line started leaking after the delivery guys left (the Wife's father arrived shortly thereafter to correct that).

The tricky part was getting the old 'fridge down this narrow passage (with 1/4" clearance) and through the small door into the very crowded darkroom/stamping room/junk room.

... but there it is (the 'fridge delivery guys managed that for us).

Then, after the old cabinets were refaced, we went out and bought two new cabinets. Now we need another countertop to match the new countertop, plus door 'n drawer hardware to match the new hardware on the old cabinets' new fronts (are you following all this?). Anyway, they said they didn't normally do jobs that small, but since we'd just spent THOUSANDS OF DOLLARS with them, they made an exception. But we might hafta wait about a month.

Two months later, they arrived, installed and departed. The countertop and hardware matches.

The last piece of business was adding tilework to the corner to match the tile over the main countertop, deftly applied by the Wife's father.

This went on fairly easily. Too easily. We forgot something.

This is the tile on the opposite side of the room. Notice the dark green (looks black) horizontal stripe? We forgot it on the new tile.

So the old tile was pulled off, the skinny dark green tiles added, and new white tiles were cut to fit.

Much better.

The next day, grout ...

... and the new corner now matches the rest of the kitchen.
